This Valentine’s Day, pianist Paul Ji takes the stage at Woolsey Hall at 7:30 PM to perform Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in F minor, Op. 21 with the Yale Symphony Orchestra (YSO) as part of the program Love and Death in 1830.
One of Chopin’s most lyrical and youthful works, the Second Piano Concerto captures the spirit of romantic expression — making it a fitting centerpiece for Valentine’s Day. The concerto’s poetic intimacy and emotional depth highlight Chopin’s extraordinary ability to transform feeling into sound.
Born in Chicago and raised in France, Paul Ji is a senior at Yale University majoring in Philosophy and Music. A Young Steinway Artist, he has recorded two solo albums with Warner Classics. At age 16, he released his debut album after winning the French national television competition Prodiges, viewed by over three million people. His forthcoming album features Chopin’s complete 24 Preludes.
Paul has performed at many of the world’s most prestigious venues, including Vienna’s Golden Hall, Berlin Philharmonie, Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, Carnegie Hall, and Hamburg’s Laeiszhalle. After winning the Virtuoso & Belcanto Concerto Competition, he performed Chopin’s Second Concerto with the Berlin Symphony Orchestra at Berlin Philharmonie and was subsequently re-invited to perform Chopin’s First Concerto and Beethoven’s Fifth Piano Concerto.
Beyond the stage, Paul is committed to social impact. Inspired by volunteer work in a palliative care unit, he founded Music For Good, a platform connecting musicians with hospitals, orphanages, and schools. The initiative received the Khemka Social Impact Prize.
This special Valentine’s Day performance celebrates both the romantic spirit of Chopin and the enduring emotional power of live music.
